Sutton Police announce safer neighbourhood team changes

Police are cutting costs by reducing the number of sergeants leading safer neighbourhood teams (SNTs). Sutton police has announced it is reducing the number of SNT sergeant posts from 18 to 14 by September. The changes means not all SNTs, based in each of the borough's 18 wards, will have their own dedicated sergeant. Senior officers have decided the SNTs in six of Sutton's lowest crime wards will now have to share three sergeants.

Nonsuch and Worcester Park SNTs will now share a sergeant, as will Cheam and Sutton West, and Sutton South and Belmont. Police said no officers would lose their jobs as a result of the changes, as officers will retire or be redeployed.

Flawed plans expensive for taxes

Cllr Graham Whitham in a letter to the Sutton Guardian this week writes:

"What a tangled web LibDem spokesman, Councillor Richard Clifton, weaves in his letter (Why maintain offices when staff can work from home? Feedback, March17).  Like so many of this council's projects the Council Offices Relocation Business Plan is fatally flawed.

It comes from the same party that is on its second such plan for the controversial Life Centre, has over-seen the over budget £3m so-called refurbishment of Sutton High Street, lost a significant sum in the Icelandic banks collapse and given us the £600,000 bus stop and the vanity project straw cafe, not to mention the totem poles at St Helier.
